No Surprises Act

The No Surprises Act took effect at the beginning of 2022. Among many other reforms, the act protects patients from surprise medical billing in certain situations and creates a process for physicians and health insurance companies to settle payment amounts.

New requirements in the No Surprises Act pertain to:

  • When care is provided by a health care professional who is out-of-network at an in-network facility
  • Emergency services and post-stabilization care at hospitals or freestanding emergency departments
  • Good faith estimates for self-pay and uninsured patients.
