The South Dakota Physician Well-Being Program is a responsive, high-quality program for physicians and residents that offers confidential, individualized support services and resources. The SDSMA, with funding assistance from Avera Health, Copic, Monument Health, Sanford Health, and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Dakota, developed this program as a resource for all South Dakota physicians. The SDSMA and its Committee on Physician wellness have worked to tackle the goal of improving physician wellness and reducing burnout in recognition that physician well-being is essential for high-quality patient care. Burnout among physicians continues to be a major issue that was compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. The SDSMA contracts with an external vendor, Midwest Health Management Services (MWHMS) to offer the South Dakota Physician Well-Being Program. The staff of MWHMS have extensive expertise in providing support for South Dakota’s health care professionals and physicians. The South Dakota Physician Well-Being Program is confidential and independent of the licensing board, state government and employers. The program is committed to supporting the well-being and health of physicians, enabling them to continue to provide high-quality patient care. The South Dakota Physician Well-Being Program offers confidential, supportive services and seeks to empower physicians to move beyond burnout and lead more satisfying lives.
