Serve as Doctor of the Day

The SDSMA’s Doctor of the Day program is a huge success every legislative session by providing basic medical assistance to legislators and staff as needed.

During the legislative session, the SDSMA commits to providing a physician to serve as Doctor of the Day for the South Dakota State Legislature. This volunteer commitment involves one day at the State Capitol in Pierre to provide basic medical assistance to legislators and staff as needed.

Doctors of the Day have the unique opportunity to interact with legislators on the House and Senate floors and get a first-hand look at the legislative process and how it affects the practice of medicine.

Your presence at the Capitol shows legislators not only your expertise but also your concern for the health of South Dakotans.

Signup for the 2027 legislative session will be posted this fall. Those with questions may email Justin Ohleen at johleen@sdsma.org.

Eligibility: All volunteers participating in the SDSMA Doctor of the Day program must hold a current, valid license to practice medicine in South Dakota. Additionally, volunteers must maintain medical malpractice coverage. If you currently do not have coverage, please contact the SDSMA for assistance in obtaining coverage for the day.
