SDSMA Membership

Be a part of a dynamic network of physicians, residents and medical students – members who are all dedicated to protecting the health care interests of patients and enhancing the effectiveness of physicians throughout South Dakota.

Your SDSMA membership is valuable, giving you access to networking and leadership opportunities with your local colleagues in your District Medical Society, free subscription to the monthly peer-reviewed journal, South Dakota Medicine, your name and practice information in the physician directory, and most especially you’ll benefit from the advocacy work we do on behalf of our profession and our patients.

SDSMA membership is important because:

• We work to improve health care in South Dakota.
• Policymakers need physician input.
• We provide an avenue for physicians to be an advocate for their patients at the state and local level through opportunities like the SDSMA Doctor of the Day program, and volunteer physician lobbyists.
• Involvement strengthens physician voices and our ability to practice high-quality medical care

If applicable, you may wish to check with your employer as they may offer coverage of membership dues as an employee benefit, or through CME funds.

Membership Types

SDSMA Active Membership ($490)

To qualify as an “Active” member, the applicant must:

• Be licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the state of South Dakota
• Be in good professional standing
• Not practice or claim to practice any system or means of healing which is not generally accepted in the medical community; and
• Be a member in good standing in their District Medical Society. Active members are voting members of SDSMA.
• District Membership in the South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA) includes automatic membership in one of twelve District Medical Societies (DMS). DMS membership is determined geographically, and dues amounts vary. The DMS provides additional services for members.

Active members need not be residents of South Dakota. Acceptance as a member of SDSMA and payment of the required dues has the effect of making the applicant a member of the applicant’s District Medical Society.

SDSMA Life Membership

To qualify as a “Life” member, the applicant: (1) must have been a member of SDSMA for a continuous term of ten years or more; (2) may not be actively engaged in the practice of medicine; (3) must be a Life member of a DMS; and (4)must be elected as a Life member by the Policy Council. Life members are voting members of SDSMA.

Life members are not required to pay dues, and are eligible for all active-level membership benefits. Contact membership@sdsma.org to inquire about Life Membership.

SDSMA Resident Membership

The applicant must be enrolled in an approved residency program located in South Dakota. Resident members are voting members of SDSMA and have access to all active-level membership benefits. Applications and dues are submitted on behalf of a resident member by a residency program in South Dakota. Contact membership@sdsma.org to inquire about Resident Membership.

SDSMA Student Membership

The applicant must be enrolled at the USD Sanford School of Medicine program in South Dakota. Students have access to all active-level membership benefits. Applications are submitted on behalf of the student member by the incoming class USD SSOM coordinator. Student membership dues for SDSMA & AMA are sponsored by SDSMA members through the Student Dues Sponsorship Program for all 4 years of medical school.

AMA Membership ($420)

SDSMA wants to encourage you to also be a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) to support South Dakota’s presence on the national stage and expand your professional base. AMA dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes but may be partially deducted as a business expense.

South Dakota Chapter American College of Surgeons Membership ($125)

Affiliate group of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and professional physicians’ group for surgeons in South Dakota, focusing on providing local surgeons with educational programing, networking, and advocacy.

South Dakota Academy of Ophthalmology (SDAO) Membership ($750)

Affiliate group of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and professional state society for ophthalmologists in South Dakota, serving as the primary advocate for ophthalmologists and their patients.
